FARMINGTON — Every year, hundreds of San Juan County residents attend community Thanksgiving meals.

This year, organizations in Aztec, Bloomfield and Farmington will host annual Thanksgiving dinners. The free meals cater to families who may not be able to afford the traditional feast and those who cannot celebrate the holiday with their families.

In Aztec, city employees and the Aztec Senior Center donated food, including turkey, rolls, stuffing, green bean casserole and pumpkin bars for the Thanksgiving dinner. Meanwhile, in Bloomfield, First Baptist Church will welcome community members into its gymnasium to celebrate Thanksgiving. The largest of the meals will be the one in Farmington, which is organized by the Salvation Army. The meal is served at the Farmington Civic Center and feeds more than 1,000 people each year.

The Aztec Senior Center is also looking for volunteers to prepare and serve meals, as well as volunteers to deliver meals to residents who are unable to leave their homes.

Cindy Iacovetto, director of the senior center, said volunteers, some of whom meet at 6 a.m. Thanksgiving, have a fun time as they prepare and serve the meals.

"We sing and we dance and we joke and we tell stories," she said.

While many volunteers work from the senior center, some also drive around Aztec and nearby areas delivering meals.

Iacovetto said anyone who knows someone living alone can provide her the person's name, phone number and address, and she will add them to the list of residents who will receive delivered meals on Thanksgiving. She can be reached at 505-334-2881.

The senior center will also host a Christmas dinner.

"That one's just a bigger version of this one," Iacovetto said.
