FARMINGTON – The holiday season can be difficult for families who have lost children or other relatives.

To help support them, two local organizations are planning candle-lighting ceremonies in memory of those who have died.

The Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home will celebrate Lights of Remembrance at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and the Tres Rios Chapter of Compassionate Friends will have an Evening of Lights at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, in the San Juan College Little Theatre.

Ernest Martinez, the New Mexico regional manager for Serenity & Company Memorial Services, said that the Lights of Remembrance event provides people with the opportunity to enjoy the holidays rather than dread them. The Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home is one of the Serenity & Company Memorial Services' funeral homes.

The event also includes the decorating of ornaments to hang on a Christmas tree inside the funeral home in memory of those who have died.

Beverly Van Sickle, a member of the local Compassionate Friends chapter, said the group serves as a support organization for “anyone who has experienced a loss of a child, no matter what age.”

On the second Sunday of December each year, Compassionate Friends chapters around the world light candles at 7 p.m.

“For an hour in each time zone, candles are lit for children who are gone too soon,” Van Sickle said.

In addition to lighting candles, the Evening of Lights features poetry readings, music and a slide show of pictures of the children who have died.

Van Sickle said people submit the photos to be placed in the slide show, and anyone who wants their child’s photo included should call her at 505-326-1074. People can also bring framed pictures of their children to place on the stage during the event.

She said the Evening of Lights is an opportunity to “keep them in our lives for that moment in time.”
