Residents expected to have clean water by end of month

FARMINGTON — Residents of the Harvest Gold subdivision should have clean water by the end of the month, according to Ammon Burton, the chairman of Apple Orchard Mutual Domestic Water Users Association.

The association is taking over the troubled water system in the subdivision from the AV Water Co. A boil-water advisory for residents has been in place for more than a year.

Burton said construction is on schedule for a connection between Bloomfield and the subdivision, which will provide clean water to residents. In the meantime, residents can get clean water from a fill station at a hydrant at the entrance to the subdivision.

Burton said Apple Orchard board members and volunteers take turns sitting by the hydrant three days a week and helping people fill their jugs. Because Apple Orchard will ultimately have to pay for the water from the hydrant, a lock has been placed on it to prevent possible theft of water or people leaving the water running.

People do not have to pay for the water when they fill their jugs, but the city of Bloomfield will bill Apple Orchard $3.57 for every 1,000 gallons from the hydrant.

The service became available at about the middle of the month. Burton said the small subdivision does not use too much water.

"We haven't dealt out 1,000 gallons yet," Burton said.

Residents can get the water from 4 to 7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Once the new connection is complete, the water lines will be flushed, and the water will be tested. If the water tests clean, the New Mexico Environment Department will lift the boil-water advisory.

"We're really looking forward to it," Burton said.

The San Juan County Office of Emergency Management is still collecting bottled water donations at McGee Park for the subdivision.
