AZTEC —More than a dozen volunteers donated their time on Christmas to help feed the community of Aztec.

The Aztec community Christmas meal has fed about 200 to 250 people each year for the past nine years.

The meal is served at the Aztec Senior-Community Center, but is also delivered to people in the community.

Cindy Iacovetto and Kathy Lamb serve meals, Monday, Dec. 25, 2017, at the Aztec Senior-Community Center.

"We like to serve the Lord for his birthday," said Susan Rarick, a Cedar Hill resident who volunteered Monday.

The food is donated by community members and cooked by volunteers. Volunteers then serve the meal and prepare boxes that are delivered door to door in the senior living apartments. Meals are also taken to the gas stations in Aztec to feed people who are working Christmas Day.

This year's meal included turkey, ham, potatoes, vegetables, pumpkin pie and rolls.

"Everybody is happy and it gives people the chance that wouldn't have a chance to get Christmas dinner," said Cyndi Koelle, who helps with food donations.

Kathy Lamb, whose family has volunteered since the inception of the event, said the meal represents what Christmas is about — community.

Lamb's parents, Deane and Chuck Lamb, prepared boxes of food for deliveries alongside their granddaughter, Alicia Meador.

"This is just the best way in the world to spend Christmas Day," said Deane Lamb, who lives in Albuquerque.
