FARMINGTON — The annual Veterans Day Parade put on by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 614 in Aztec will not take place this year.

Abe Saiz, the post commander, said the VFW received word two weeks ago that the parade had not been authorized by state officials. The parade was scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Saturday on Main Avenue in Aztec.

Because Main Avenue is also U.S. Highway 550, the VFW needed authorization from the New Mexico Department of Transportation to shut down the road for the parade.

When reached by phone, NMDOT spokeswoman Rosanne Rodriguez said the department does not have a record of receiving a special permit request for the parade.

"Usually, those process quite easily," she said.

Rodriguez offered to expedite a permit so the parade could still take place, but Saiz said the VFW already had informed people that it had been canceled. The VFW will still present its Veterans Day breakfast from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at its building, 201 S. Park Ave.
