FARMINGTON — A small cardboard receptacle near a kiosk inside the San Juan County administration office building, 100 S. Oliver Drive in Aztec, now allows people to properly retire their U.S. flags.

The container is one of three that the county has placed in different locations. People can also take the flags to the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, 211 S. Oliver Drive in Aztec, or the McGee Park multi-use building, 41 County Road 5568 in the Lee Acres area.

Flags that are worn out, tattered or ripped should be properly retired, according to a San Juan County press release.

As of Thursday evening, there was already one flag inside the container at the administration building.

"San Juan County has provided a place where residents can drop off their old, torn, and tattered flags for a proper, dignified disposal," County Commissioner Margaret McDaniel said in a press release announcing the new service.

She said the county will work with groups like scouting groups or veterans organizations to properly retire the flags.

According to the press release, the new service is part of a national campaign to support flag etiquette. People can learn about proper flag etiquette at usflag.org.

Claude Coberly, the post commander for Aztec Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 614, said the VFW post also accepts worn flags. He said when the post has enough flags that need to be retired, it will host a flag retirement ceremony. Coberly, who is a Vietnam veteran, said people can bring flags to the post between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. every day except for Sunday.

"(The flag) deserves the respect," Coberly said. "It does not need to be thrown away."
