Construction underway for new O'Reilly Auto Parts
O'Reilly will be the fourth auto parts store in Aztec
FARMINGTON — Crews are currently constructing a building that will house an O'Reilly Auto Parts store in Aztec, a business that will become the city's fourth auto parts store.
While O'Reilly Auto Parts is optimistic about the location, some Aztec residents are upset about an agreement between the city and the developer, Hutton Team LLC. In January 2016, the City Commission unanimously approved the agreement to help pay for nearly $100,000 of infrastructure improvements.
"We went to the city and asked them why they think we need a fourth parts store," said Bob Dusenbery, owner of Dusenbery Auto Parts.
He said he has complained about the loss of revenue the new business will cause.
"It's not a good deal for us and Napa and AutoZone that are already here," Dusenbery said.
He said his business may have an advantage because it also sells ATVs and trailers and is part of the CarQuest chain. Being part of the chain allows it to have competitive prices compared with stores like O'Reilly Auto Parts.
"We've been here for 80 years, so I think we'll be able to hold on," he said.
The O'Reilly building is located off Ash Street and West Aztec Boulevard. A five-acre, basin-like parcel was subdivided and filled with dirt to develop the O'Reilly business at a location across the street from AutoZone.
Mark Merz, a spokesman for O'Reilly Auto Parts, said the company does not yet have a timeline for when it may open, however he expected it will open early next year.
"It was a great site for us to come in and open a new location," Merz said.
In a text message, City Manager Joshua Ray said the city supports Dusenbery's, Napa and AutoZone.
"This project has the ability to not only bring one additional business to Aztec, but our hope is that two more businesses will locate alongside O'Reilly's," Ray said.
The City Commission approved the agreement because it would provide additional development space for new businesses.
Ray said there have been discussions with businesses about developing at the location. He said once O'Reilly is complete the two lots next to it will be prime for development because they will have easy access to the highway as well as Elm Street. They will also have access to water, electric and natural gas utilities.
"I feel confident we will see something positive happen on those sites within the next six months or so," he said.
