FARMINGTON — Members of the Aztec Police Department welcomed members of the public to Minium Park tonight for the community's 18th annual National Night Out celebration.

The event featured live entertainment, carnival rides, a donut-eating contest, and free food and drinks. Bicycles and safety helmets, as well as other items, were given away in drawings.

The celebration is designed to help residents connect with officers and help them feel comfortable reporting suspicious or unusual behavior, according to Chief Mike Heal.

Aztec police stage their National Night Out event earlier than the date designated for the national event on the first Tuesday in August to avoid conflicts with other local events, including the Connie Mack World Series and the San Juan County Fair.
