Aztec 4-year-old drowns in Animas River

FARMINGTON — A 4-year-old girl drowned this evening after she fell into the Animas River north of Aztec.

San Juan County emergency personnel were dispatched at 5:07 p.m. to the river near County Roads 2626 and 2900 after receiving reports the girl slipped into the river while playing near its edge.

After an extensive search, a helicopter pilot with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office's located the girl at 6:29 p.m. in the river near where she disappeared, according to Sheriff's Office detective Lt. Kyle Lincoln. The pilot landed the helicopter and performed CPR on the girl, who was then transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center, according to Lincoln.

The lieutenant said she was pronounced dead at 6:57 p.m.

The girl is identified as Emily Winer, of Aztec.

The girl went under the water while playing near the river with family, but she did not resurface, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Office.

Police initially thought the girl was 3 years old.
