FARMINGTON — The man who went missing Sunday in the Animas River north of Aztec turned up alive Tuesday.

Kevin Jones, division chief at the San Juan County Fire Department, said the 50-year-old man contacted dispatch Tuesday to report that he managed to escape from the river without assistance, and he did not realize he was the subject of a search effort.

"He didn't realize anyone had contacted 911," Jones said.

The fire department searched large segments of the river on Sunday afternoon after receiving reports a man was floating down the river near County Road 2892.

The department located the man's kayak, but he was not found.

Jones said the man told him he escaped the river not far from where he overturned the kayak.
