AZTEC — The city of Aztec will have a groundbreaking ceremony for phase 1B of the East Aztec Arterial Route at 11 a.m. Monday across from Pepsi Way on U.S. Highway 550, city manager Joshua Ray announced during a commission meeting Tuesday.

The city has been planning the East Aztec Arterial Route for more than a decade.

The route will divert heavy semitrailer traffic from the city's downtown, where officials say the vehicles are causing damage to historic buildings. The route will divert traffic from the highway south of downtown near the Aztec Speedway. The route will take traffic east of downtown, across the Williams Arroyo and then north to rejoin the highway at its intersection of Navajo Dam Road.

Phase 1B of the project will construct less than one mile of the five-mile bypass and will cost nearly $4 million.

The phase is partially funded through a combination of federal and state dollars.
