FARMINGTON — A nationwide co-op organization that provides communities with fresh produce has come to Aztec.

Bountiful Baskets delivered more than 90 baskets of fruit and vegetables to people at the Aztec Senior-Community Center on Friday.

"There's a great excitement in the atmosphere," Cindy Iacovetto, the center director, said as volunteers placed the fruit and veggies into baskets.

The program provides a limited number of baskets — 96 per location — which are purchased through a website.

After purchasing a basket early in the week, the consumer then takes a laundry basket to the center to pick up the produce on Friday. The produce is available every other Friday.

Aztec is now the third community in San Juan County to have a Bountiful Baskets site.

Misty Durham and Teresa McDaniel have been buying baskets in Farmington. They decided to show up and volunteer to show their support of the program in Aztec.

"I like supporting small farmers," McDaniel said.

The produce is grown by small farms across the country. But supporting local farmers is not the only attraction for some consumers.

"I like the price," Durham said.

A basket costs $15, or $25 for organic produce.

That price was also one of the factors that attracted Iman Lynn to become involved in the program in Farmington. She stopped by the Aztec site to help on Friday to show her support.

"You get to meet the community," she said. "You get to get fresh veggies and fruits, and you don't spend a lot of money."
