Farmington teen will appear live on NBC-TV's 'The Voice'

Local viewers can help Chevel Shepherd win title

FARMINGTON — Having survived three rounds of competition, Farmington High School junior Chevel Shepherd joins the other remaining contestants on NBC-TV's "The Voice" tonight for the live shows portion of the competition.

A total of 24 competitors will be featured live on the program tonight, and 12 of them will advance, along with one eliminated performer selected from the "Comeback Stage," according to Stephanie Alperin of NBC Entertainment Publicity.

Shepherd is a member of Team Clarkson on the program, meaning she is aligned with judge Kelly Clarkson, who serves as her coach and mentor. The format for the next round dictates that two competitors from each team will be chosen to advance through the popular vote by viewers, and one will be chosen by their coach, Alperin said. The other coaches are Jennifer Hudson, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.

The winners from tonight's round will be announced during Tuesday's episode, Alperin said.

Shepherd advanced to tonight's live show with her winning performance last week in the "Knockout Round," delivering a well-received cover of Bruce Robison's "Travelin' Soldier," a song that became a No. 1 hit for the Dixie Chicks in 2002.

Farmington's Chevel Shepherd continues her quest for the title on "The Voice" with another appearance on the program Monday night.

Fans of the program have two ways to help select the winners on tonight's program. They can download the official "Voice" app at nbc.com/Voiceapp or they can go online to nbc.com/VoiceVote. Later rounds also will offer voting via Apple Music or Xfinity X1.

Shepherd first appeared on the program on Oct. 1, winning her "Blind Auditions" round with a performance of "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry. She was back on the show on Oct. 22, winning her "Battle Round" competition with a performance of "You Look So Good in Love," a tune written by Glen Ballard, Rory Michael Bourke and Kerry Chater that became a No. 1 hit for country legend George Strait in 1983.

That propelled her to the "Knockout Round," where she was again victorious. The overall winner of the competition will receive a recording contract.

Shepherd has spent much of the past several months in Los Angeles shooting episodes of the series at Universal Studios or working with Clarkson and pop icon Mariah Carey, who serves as an adviser for the series.

The Farmington teenager said she already has received several opportunities to continue her career after her experience on "The Voice" is over, and she hopes to move to Nashville someday and establish herself as a country star.
