FARMINGTON — The San Juan United Way is changing its format for its annual Day of Caring this year.

Instead of having a single day during which companies and other groups adopt volunteer projects to work on, the San Juan United Way will have projects available for groups to adopt throughout the year.

San Juan United Way director of resource development Jennifer Johnson explained that some groups were unable to commit to the day that was set aside for Day of Caring, but still wanted to participate.

“It’s just going to be a constant flow of projects coming in,” she said.

San Juan United Way executive director Cathryn Abeyta said the San Juan United Way also will accept projects throughout the year from nonprofit organizations that need assistance.

“We’d really like to open it up and put a call out to the community and other nonprofits,” she said.

Abeyta said more groups will have the opportunity to volunteer if more projects are submitted.

Nonprofit organizations wanting to submit projects can email Johnson at jennifer.johnson@sjunitedway.org with a copy of their 501c3 letter. She then will send them instructions about how to register.

Abeyta and Johnson said the San Juan United Way is focusing on its “I’m a Giver” slogan — the idea that there are more ways to give than just through monetary donations. They said Day of Caring ties in with that emphasis.

Past Day of Caring projects have included the installation of privacy blinds at Northwest New Mexico Sexual Assault Services headquarters, working at the New Beginnings garden, the cleanup and landscaping of a playground at Presbyterian Medical Service’s Little Feet, and helping with the annual local fundraiser Boots and Bling.

Abeyta said the San Juan United Way expects to get a lot more interest from groups interested in volunteering with the new format.
