San Juan Symphony plans concert of Brahms, Bernstein material

The San Juan Symphony will perform a program focused on legendary composers Johannes Brahms and Leonard Bernstein at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Henderson Performance Hall on the San Juan College campus, 4601 College Blvd. in Farmington.

Maestro Thomas Heuser will lead the symphony, which will be joined by boy soprano Ben Hinkley and a choir made up of members of Caliente Community Choir in Farmington and the Durango Choral Society.

The concert opens with Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms," a group of selections from the Hebrew Book of Psalms, before concluding with Brahms' First Symphony, which the composer completed only after a long musical apprenticeship when he was 43 years old.

Heuser will offer a free preview of the concert at 2 p.m. Sunday in the performance hall.

World War I exhibition opens 5-month stay at Farmington Museum

A new exhibition examining the impact and influence of World War I on American life opens Thursday at the Farmington Museum at Gateway Park, 3041 E. Main St.

"World War I: Lessons and Legacies" features posters from the Library of Congress and panels from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, as well as artifacts from the museum's permanent collection.

Admission is free, but $3 donations are welcome. The show remains on display through March 30. Call 505-599-1174.

Series of craft fairs scheduled Saturday across Farmington

Craft fair season in the Farmington area gets underway this weekend with four such events planned.

The the Bonnie Dallas Senior Center, 109 E. La Plata St. in Farmington, plays host to a holiday craft fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. Call 505-599-1380.
