Harvest underway at Farmignton's Kerby Orchard

San Juan County may have experienced its first freeze of the season earlier this week, but harvest activities remain in full swing at the Kerby Orchard in Farmington, the only remaining orchard in a valley that once was home to several dozen such operations.

Established in 1945, the orchard produces a variety of fruits, including cherries, apricots, peaches, plums, pears and apples. Workers were plucking winter pears on Tuesday, one of two pear varieties grown at the orchard. Later this week, they will pick Fuji apples, one of 14 apple varieties Kerby grows.

The orchard is open every day but Sunday through the end of October, when it switches to its winter hours. Call 505-325-2932 for more information.
