Showcase on Dustin series continues with concert of big band music

An evening of big band music is on tap Saturday when the Showcase on Dustin music series continues with a performance by Jeff Solon's Swing'n Big Band at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 865 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington.

Solon is well known to music fans in northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado, having performed extensively in the area. He plays a number of instruments, including saxophone, clarinet, flute, harmonica and piano, in addition to serving as a band leader, composer, arranger and teacher. He teaches jazz studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and is a regular at school assemblies and workshops in the area.

Tickets for Saturday's concert are $15 and can be purchased at the door. Admission includes two glasses of wine, and all proceeds go to the Tres Rios Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Call 970-903-5505 for more information.

San Juan Quilters Guild Show featured at McGee Park this weekend

Quilt displays, demonstrations, vendors, boutiques, a "people's choice" competition and more will be part of the annual San Juan Quilters Guild Show Friday and Saturday at the McGee Park Multi-Use Building, 41 County Road 5568 between Farmington and Bloomfield.

The event features the work of quilters from around the Four Corners and demonstrations of their craft. Also planned are a boutique featuring a number of handmade items for purchase and a celebration of the guild's 35th anniversary. A presentation honoring the area's first responders also is in the works, along with a silent auction.

The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5, free for children 12 and younger. Visit sjqg.org for more information.

San Juan College music groups plan concert at performance hall

A joint performance by the San Juan College Choir and Company groups is planned for 7 p.m. Friday in the Henderson Fine Arts Center Performance Hall on the college campus, 4601 College Blvd. in Farmington.

The concert will be highlighted by a performance of the Missa Festiva, a festive mass by John Leavitt that was commissioned for the International Choral Symposium in Kansas City. Completed in 1991, it features lyrical melody and piano accompaniment. The Kirtland Central High School Chamber Choir will join the San Juan College Choir and company in the performance.

The concert also features a set of classic pop tunes such as "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," "Chain Gang" and "Mr. Sandman."
