FARMINGTON — Rehabilitation work on the gates and valves at Navajo Dam is expected to begin this month, according to a press release from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which oversees operations at the reservoir.

The bureau has awarded a $1.49 million contract to Unico Mechanical, a Benicia, California-based company, to rehabilitate the gates and valves at the reservoir.

According to the press release, the construction will begin after the summer reservoir releases end. The bureau plans to have the rehabilitation and construction work completed by the end of March. According to the press release, that will allow the bureau to begin its spring reservoir releases at the normal time of year.

“This contract will bring full functionality to the 30-inch hollow jet system that releases water from Navajo Dam,” Upper Colorado Regional Director Brent Rhees said in the press release. “That will allow us to more efficiently release low flows from the dam compared to using the auxiliary gate. The rehabilitation work will also reduce leakage and conserve water.”
