First responders train for disaster situations

Simulated riot staged at San Juan County Adult Detention Center

FARMINGTON — First responders participated in the annual emergency disaster simulation today at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center.

Members of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office SWAT team members meet before participating in a training session Wednesday at the San Juan County Detention Center in Farmington.

The simulation was designed to train police and fire officials, and other first responders how to respond during disaster scenarios.

Today's scenario focused on responding to a riot at the detention center.

Planning for the simulation began with a Homeland Security orientation seminar in January.

The event was sponsored by the New Mexico Gas Company.
