UPDATE: The county canceled the special meeting Wednesday morning. The County Commission will meet to confirm the rates at a later date.

FARMINGTON — The San Juan County Commission has scheduled a special meeting for 4 p.m. Thursday at the county offices at 100 S. Oliver Drive in Aztec to discuss property tax rates.

The County Commission is required to confirm property tax rates on a yearly basis.

The tax rates have been sent to the county by the state. The numbers are checked by the county, municipalities and school districts.

Each year, the County Commission confirms the rates after officials verify that the state’s calculations are correct. The county does not set the tax rate. The commission likely will confirm the calculations on Thursday.

County Executive Officer Kim Carpenter said the county serves as a watchdog to make sure the state’s calculations are correct, and communicates with the school districts and municipalities to check their tax numbers.
