Sewage spills into Animas River in Durango
FARMINGTON — The city of Durango, Colorado, has notified local water users of a sewage spill this afternoon into the Animas River, according to spokesman Mitchell Carter.
“It was a very minimal amount,” Carter said. “It was stopped almost immediately.”
Carter said a camera was placed in the pipe this afternoon to help determine the cause of the spill.
The overflow from the sewer impacted the flow of traffic on U.S. Highway 550 near Santa Rita Park and led to some detours, according to The Durango Herald.
Carter said he does not know what impact the sewage spill could have on downstream users in New Mexico.
San Juan County emergency manager Mike Mestas said all water authorities and ditches have been alerted about the spill.
