AZTEC — San Juan County Undersheriff Shane Ferrari has named Capt. Cory Tanner as his successor.

Ferrari likely will be the next San Juan County sheriff after defeating Farmington businessman Tommy Bolack in the Republican primary election in June. Ferrari received more than 8,000 votes while Bolack received fewer than 1,300 votes.

Ferrari announced his pick on his Shane Ferrari for Sheriff Facebook page last week after no independent or minor-party candidates filed paperwork to run for sheriff in the November election.

The filing deadline for independent, write-in and minor-party candidates was June 28. Former Bloomfield police Chief Mike Kovacs had campaign signs displayed in Farmington and Bloomfield, and had posted on Facebook that he planned on running as an independent for sheriff, but he did not file the required paperwork.

Ferrari is running as a Republican, and there are no Democratic or Libertarian party candidates in the race.

The current sheriff, Ken Christesen, has reached term limits and cannot run for re-election this year.

Tanner has worked for the Sheriff’s Office since December 2002. He served as a deputy, a field training officer, a detective, a patrol sergeant, a detective sergeant and a detective lieutenant before he moved to his current role.

He said he was honored when Ferrari asked him to be the next undersheriff.

“Shane and Ken have done really good things,” Tanner said.

Tanner predicted the local economy will be one of the Sheriff’s Office’s biggest challenges in the upcoming years. He said the potential closure of San Juan Generating Station and San Juan Mine could lead to a reduction in the Sheriff’s Office’s budget.

Ferrari likely take Christesen’s place as sheriff on Jan. 1.
