The Farmington Public Library celebrated the summer solstice today with live music and an observance of sunlight illuminating the solstice marker on the library floor.

The event attracted dozens of visitors, who gathered to listen to the music of local singer-songwriter Corey Allison before the rays of the sun stretched across the library floor to the marker. The phenomenon takes place at noon on the day each year with the longest period of daylight. The library has a similar floor marker for observances of the winter solstice.

The sun rose today at 5:54 a.m. and will set at 8:35 p.m., accounting for 14 hours, 40 minutes of sunlight in Farmington. Daylight hours will decrease until after the winter solstice on Dec. 21.
