Legislators to discuss school safety, violence in Aztec
Farmington City Council, CCSD board also have meetings this week
FARMINGTON — Legislators from around the state will visit Aztec High School this week to learn about the school shooting that occurred in December. The committee will discuss school safety and other topics during the three-day session.
The Legislative Education Study Committee will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Aztec High School.
Tuesday’s topics include a tour of Aztec High School, a presentation about gun violence and mental and behavioral health, discussion about preventing school violence and intervening when it does occur and a discussion about recovering after school violence.
Aztec High School parents and students will attend the Tuesday meeting to discuss recovery after violent incidents.
School district superintendents from Aztec, Bloomfield, Farmington and Dulce will talk about strategic initiatives in their districts during the Monday session. At 1 p.m. Monday, the committee will hear from San Juan College staff about the alternative licensure program for elementary and high school teachers.

Water conference focuses on Gold King Mine spill aftermath
The third annual Conference on Environmental Conditions of the Animas and San Juan Watersheds will have presentations Wednesday and Thursday at San Juan College.
The conference is part of the long-term monitoring plan put into place after the Gold King Mine spill of August 2015.

Farmington Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Commission will hear update on Complete Streets
The Farmington Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Commission will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday at 119 W. Main St. The agenda includes a presentation about the Local Foods, Local Places program, discussion of the Red Apple Transit Hub Study and updates on the downtown business resiliency project and Complete Streets project.
Farmington City Council meets Tuesday morning
The Farmington City Council will discuss federal Community Development Block Grant funding and updating its Local Economic Development Act during a 9 a.m. work session Tuesday at City Hall, 800 N. Municipal Drive.
It will also hear an update about the current state of the recycling industry.
CCSD board meeting in Kirtland
An executive session to discuss possible litigation regarding the Public Service Company of New Mexico is among the items listed on the regular meeting agenda for the Central Consolidated School District Board of Education.
Earlier in the month, the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission held a public hearing regarding PNM's Integrated Resource Plan.
School board members will discuss with legal counsel pending or threatening litigation regarding the public hearing, according to the agenda.
The board is also scheduled to listen to a report from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office regarding the school resource officer program.
Other items on the three-page agenda are updates to the New Mexico School Boards Association advisory policies, a report about a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and field trip requests.
The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kirtland Board Room in Kirtland.
