FARMINGTON — Firefighters from two states continued battling hot spots in the Arena Canyon Fire today on the New Mexico-Colorado border west of Navajo Lake near N.M. Highway 511, according to the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management.

The fire was reported Friday afternoon and is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. San Juan County officials said firefighters had the 180-acre blaze surrounded by Friday night, but they evacuated 15 people from the area and closed N.M. 511 until this morning, when the roadway was opened for motorists via escort.

Firefighters from Ignacio, Colorado, were joined by those from San Juan County, Blanco, Cedar Hill, Center Point, Flora Vista, Farmington, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service in the effort to combat the blaze.
