FARMINGTON — People looking for companionship and a hot Thanksgiving meal can stop by the Farmington Civic Center or the Aztec Senior Community Center on Thursday.

The Salvation Army is presenting its annual community Thanksgiving dinner from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Farmington Civic Center, 200 W. Arrington St., while the Aztec Senior Community Center, 101 S. Park Ave., is offering a Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Aztec Senior Community Center is also taking requests to deliver meals to people who are not able to go to the center for the community meal. Director Cindy Iacovetto said people can call the office at 505-334-2881.

The larger of the two meals is the one at the Farmington Civic Center. Salvation Army Lt. Darla Malone said the dinner is free to anyone in the community, and the Salvation Army is anticipating serving 800 meals. The Aztec Senior Community Center is prepared to serve about 200 people.

"Thanksgiving is about community," Malone said.

She said the dinner provides people with the opportunity to interact with each other, especially for people who would otherwise be alone on Thanksgiving.

"This is a community meal," she said. "We couldn't do this without the community."

Iacovetto said people can attend the community meal and receive hot food and a hug. She said she enjoys helping put on the community meal each year because she knows it means no one will be alone on the holiday or without food.

"I think it's important to continue the community meal because there are such a diverse group of people who come," she said.

The Salvation Army is also looking for volunteers to help with the dinner and other activities. Malone said people can sign up to volunteer online at volunteer.usawest.org.
