Kirtland considers increasing gross receipts tax
Tax increase would fund sewer improvements, infrastructure
KIRTLAND — People shopping in Kirtland may have to pay a little more if the Town Council adopts two new gross receipts taxes.
The council unanimously approved a motion to publish an intent to adopt notices about the two taxes. The Town Council met this afternoon in the new Town Hall near the Kirtland Youth Association.
If the council approves the taxes, there will be a new 1/8th of 1 percent gross receipts tax and a new 1/16th of 1 percent gross receipts tax. The gross receipts tax is similar to sales tax, but it is levied on the seller of the products.
Mayor Mark Duncan said the two taxes will pay for sewer infrastructure and improvements in coordination with the Valley Water and Sanitation District. The Valley Water and Sanitation District provides water and wastewater services to Kirtland.
In other news, councilors discussed plans for building a town park surrounding the newly built Town Hall. Designs for a park were displayed in a board in the council chambers at the Town Hall.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Town Hall building will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 28, after construction of a sign with cast aluminum lettering is complete.
Kirtland is also working to join the local Metropolitan Planning Organization, which works to prioritize street and transportation projects for San Juan County.
It will cost about $500 for Kirtland to join the organization, according to Duncan. The cost is based on the population.
Councilor Larry Hathaway said membership in the MPO would allow the town to communicate more with New Mexico Department of Transportation officials, who are also involved in the MPO.
"It's a good opportunity to kind of bend their ear on some of the issues we're having in our area," he said.
