AZTEC — The San Juan County Commission has approved a 25-year franchise agreement with Farmington Electric Utility Service to provide electricity to unincorporated areas.

The current agreement will expire at the end of the month, and the Farmington City Council also will have to approve a new deal prior to July.

Commissioners unanimously approved the new agreement during their Tuesday meeting in Aztec.

The franchise agreement serves essentially as a rental agreement for rights of way to provide the electric service. The amount Farmington pays San Juan County for the right of way access will not increase under the new agreement. Currently, Farmington pays a 3 percent commission to San Juan County.

During the commission meeting Tuesday, county attorney Doug Echols said people who live in unincorporated areas will not pay more for electricity than Farmington residents.
