AZTEC — San Juan County must update electrical infrastructure at McGee Park or it will not be able to host the county fair in August.

County Operations Officer Mike Stark said the state electrical inspector discovered several deficiencies while inspecting a new building. They include a lack of ground fault circuit interrupters at McGee Park's pig barn, beef barn and livestock buildings.

The ground fault circuit interrupters shut off the power circuit when electrical currents are detected flowing along an unintended path. This helps to prevent electrocution.

Stark said the inspector made it clear the county would not be able to host the fair if it did not take care of the most important issues.

The county will make the improvements in three phases. The first phase must be completed prior to the start of the fair. The first phase includes upgrades at the pig barn, beef barn and livestock buildings.

The County Commission on Tuesday approved awarding a bid if the bid is within the $224,000 range.

In addition to upgrading electrical infrastructure, the commission also approved rate increases at McGee Park for RV space rentals and rates for outdoor riding arena rentals.

"We're one of the least expensive RV parks in the area," park administrator Daniel Hill said Tuesday.

He said McGee Park charged $20 a night while nearby parks were charging $30 a night. The commission approved increasing rates to $30 a night.

Hill said McGee Park's RV spaces are primarily for convenience and do not have all the amenities that private parks do, including sewer hookups. However, he said some people prefer McGee Park because of its security.

The outdoor riding arena rental rates were increased to $35 an hour with a three-hour minimum without a tractor driver or $65 an hour with a tractor driver.
