Flames engulfed a home on Crouch Mesa Wednesday morning, completely destroying the singlewide trailer, but residents were evacuated and no one was injured.

San Juan County Fire Department Division Chief David Vega said the fire was small when firefighters arrived at the home on County Road 5590, but quickly spread. By about 11:40 a.m., the red and white trailer was destroyed. By noon, the flames had died down. Firefighters broke through a portion of the wall to allow crews to dowse some flames inside the trailer with water.

Smoke from the blaze could be seen from Browning Parkway.

Neighbor Ron Baca waited in his truck with his dog, prepared to evacuate if needed.

“I was pretty concerned because it started in the back and the propane is in the back,” he said.

Baca said sheriff’s deputies were the first on scene and asked him if he had a hose to help battle the fire as they waited for firefighters to arrive.

His daughter, Melissa Baca, later joined him.

“You’ve got to be prepared,” she said. “Sparks may fly.”
