Standards Based Assessment testing begins in Farmington schools
Superintendent says PARCC testing slated for April, May
FARMINGTON — Students in the Farmington Municipal School District began standardized testing last week.
High school juniors took the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment for science on March 7 to start the spring testing season, according to statement from Superintendent Eugene Schmidt.
Seventh-graders and fourth-graders throughout the district also will take the science exam on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
All students in third through 11th grades also will be tested with the New Mexico Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or the PARCC test, in April, according to the statement. PARCC testing is designed to examine a student’s grasp of English-language arts and math, and will take place in April and May.
Schmidt said Thursday that standardized testing is “important because it does give the school and the family the opportunity to see visually what kids know and can do.”
The two tests are used “to determine the level at which New Mexico students achieve the New Mexico Common Core State Standards and the New Mexico content standards, benchmarks and performance standards at the school and district level,” according to the statement. Testing scores allow districts and schools to measure students’ progress over time.
The test results will also be used to help determine school and district grades in the New Mexico Public Education Department’s accountability system, according to the statement. They are used to calculate proficiency rates in reading, math and science.
The Farmington Muncipal School District has earned a B rating for its district report card grade for the past two years, according to information from the PED.
Students in New Mexico have been taking the SBA test since 2005, and the PARCC test was developed in the 2014-15 school year, according to the PED website.
