FARMINGTON — The Central Consolidated School District has banned bags from any district-sponsored events at the middle and high schools in the district.

Spectators attending any CCSD-sponsored event, including athletic activities, are not allowed to bring in any bags, including purses and backpacks, at any of the district's secondary schools, according to district spokeswoman Renee Lucero.

The procedure change was announced in a post on the district's Facebook page this afternoon and went into effect immediately.

Lucero said the change was not in response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Wednesday or any specific event. Seventeen people were killed and 14 people were injured after a former student went on a shooting rampage, according to USA Today.

The district is encouraging people to leave their valuables at home, as CCSD said it wil not be responsible for any lost or stolen items.

The procedure change is effective until further notice, and a decision regarding the policy will be made in the future, according to Lucero.

The district said accommodations will be made for spectators with medical needs or for infants.
