FARMINGTON — School districts in San Juan County are offering free meals as part of a national summer food program to feed local students.

As part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Summer Food Service Program, the four school districts in San Juan County are providing free meals to people 18 years old and younger this summer.

The program operated by the Bloomfield School District in Aztec and Bloomfield started offering breakfast and lunch today, launching with a barbecue lunch at the Bloomfield Multicultural Center. Meals will be offered weekdays through July 29.

Evelyn Barry, Bloomfield food services director, said the barbecue lunch was held to generate interest about the program in the community.

Bloomfield schools served 2,236 breakfast meals and 17,753 lunch meals in 2015 at its 10 locations in Aztec and Bloomfield, according to Lulu Hampton, district food services administrative assistant.

Central Primary Elementary School in Bloomfield is the only location serving hot breakfast and lunch. The other seven locations will serve bagged meals.

A new location in the Lee Acres area was added this year. Barry said breakfast and lunch meals will be served in the park behind the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office substation at 21 County Road 5500 in Farmington.

The Central Consolidated and Farmington Municipal school districts will offer meals starting Monday and continuing through July 29.

The Farmington schools food services department extended its summer meal program about four weeks longer than the 2015 program, said Jaynelle Minor, the district's student nutrition supervisor. Last year’s program ended on July 2.

“We just see the need in the community,” Minor said. “We felt that if we stayed open longer, we would be able to meet the needs of the community better.”

Farmington schools served 6,855 breakfast meals and 9,129 lunch meals in 2015, according to Minor.

At the six locations operated by Farmington schools, breakfast and lunch will be served outside on school grounds instead of in the school cafeterias. Minor said there will be no staff onsite at the schools to monitor the meals since there is no summer school this year.

The CCSD food services department served 28,325 breakfast meals and 78,539 lunch meals at its 20 locations in 2015, according to Margene Purcella, district food service coordinator. The CCSD summer meal program includes locations in Kirtland, Shiprock, Farmington, Newcomb, Naschitti and Sanostee.
