FARMINGTON — Navajo Preparatory School students have organized a 5K fundraiser to raise money for school activities and promote wellness.

Students in the class of 2017 will host the UV SPLASH by Color Dash 5K on Friday evening at Farmington's Berg Park.

Junior Kolten Benally said students were looking for a fundraiser and discovered that an event like UV SPLASH had never taken place in the Four Corners.

Volunteers will throw water and non-toxic cornstarch and UV dye at the 5K participants. The materials react under UV light stations along the course, causing the runners to glow in the dark.

The race will start and finish at the Little Pavilion in Berg Park.

"With the run, I think we just wanted to try something new, and a lot of our classmates do enjoy running," junior Taishana Tsosie said. "To have running brought in a new perspective with colors, the vibrant energy of everybody, I think it's going to be a lot of fun."

Proceeds from half of the ticket sales will benefit the school, with funds going toward prom and graduation expenses.

Navajo Prep applied with Color Dash to host the race and was approved because of the school's nonprofit status, said Sandra Westbrook, director of admissions and public relations.

She said the company helped submit permits to host the race, provided the necessary equipment and materials and created posters students have used to promote the race.

The Navajo Prep cross-country teams have volunteered to help with registration and at UV stations. About 40 student and parent volunteers will assist during the run.

Also during the event, there will be music, a dance competition and hula-hoop contest.

"I think it's an opportunity for us to connect with the community," Tsosie said.
