Suspect allegedly strangled a young male relative

FARMINGTON — A Crouch Mesa man is accused of child abuse after allegedly striking a young male relative with a belt and strangling him.

Brian Adams, 38, is accused of a first-degree and third-degree felony counts of child abuse and a felony count of false imprisonment, according to court records.

Adams is accused of striking the victim in the face with an open hand, strangling the victim and striking him with a belt, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

He did not have legal representation as of Monday.

A deputy for the San Juan County Sheriff's Office was dispatched around 5:43 p.m. on Oct. 15 to a residence on County Road 3721 on reports of child abuse.

The deputy spoke to the alleged victim, along with other occupants in the residence when the alleged incident occurred.

The youth stated the alleged incident started over a school assignment that was due that day, 

The youth told a deputy that Adams hit him three times on the left side of his face with an open hand, then struck the right side of his face five times.

Adams allegedly struck the alleged victim in the chin and mouth area, causing his lips to start bleeding.

The youth told the deputy Adams grabbed him around the throat with two hands and lifted him off the ground.

The child stated he was struggling to breath and felt like he was going to pass out.

Adams allegedly followed by grabbing the youth's shirt and striking the victim with a belt about 10-15 times. The victim stated he was struck in the back of his thighs and buttock area.

Adams' convictions include misdemeanor charges of criminal damage to property, larceny and criminal trespass; four felony counts of criminal sexual penetration and a felony count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to court documents.

The San Juan County District Attorney's Office filed a motion to hold Adams without bond pending trial.

A hearing on the case is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in Aztec District Court.

His preliminary hearing is set for Thursday morning in Aztec Magistrate Court.

Adams is being held on a no-bond hold at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center.
