Suspect accused of stealing a friend's pickup truck
FARMINGTON — A Bloomfield man is accused of stealing a pickup truck last month in Aztec, and also of attacking a man this month in Farmington, leaving the victim's face bloodied and severely battered.
Kenneth Platero, 22, is accused of aggravated battery and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle in two separate cases, according to court records.
He allegedly attacked a man on Sept. 8 in Farmington, throwing a rock at the victim's head and causing a head laceration, according to the probable cause statement.
In a separate case, Platero is accused of stealing a 1998 red Dodge pickup truck from an Aztec residence, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
Theresa Walker, Platero's public defender, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
A Farmington Police Department officer was dispatched around 12:16 p.m. on Sept. 8 to the area of North Court Avenue and East Main Street on reports of a possible fight, according to court documents.
Platero was contacted by an officer as he was leaving the area of the alleged incident. He was taken into custody for a warrant in the alleged vehicle theft case.
Platero told police he got into a fight with a man that struck him with a stick several times and that he punched the man once in the face.
A half-empty bottle of tequila was found in Platero's backpack. He stated that he had been drinking.
Another officer located the victim with a female witness. The victim stated Platero struck him in the head with a rock then continued to batter him.
An officer described the victim's face as bloodied and severely battered with a laceration on his head. The victim was transported to the San Juan Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The alleged vehicle theft occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Aug. 26 at a residence in the 300 block of North Light Plant Road.
The victim told police his friend, Platero, was visiting his residence and Platero stated he was going to leave about 7:30 p.m.
The victim went to the bathroom and when he returned; a set of keys to the pickup truck, the pickup truck and Platero were gone.
Platero was incarcerated Thursday morning at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center on a $1,000 cash at 10 percent bond.
His preliminary hearing on the aggravated battery case is set for Oct. 10 in Farmington Magistrate Court. The preliminary hearing for the vehicle theft case is set for Oct. 4 in Aztec Magistrate Court.
