Three people were killed in two fatal car crashes Tuesday in Eddy County.

New Mexico State Police said that a head-on collision led to the death of David Lewis, 50, of Artesia.

Lewis was driving on U.S. Highway 285 near Artesia at about 6:20 a.m. when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic.

Lewis' truck collided with a semi tractor trailer, injuring its driver.

The truck driver, a 49-year-old man, and a 28-year-old passenger in Lewis' vehicle were airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition was unknown.

Later that morning, at about 8 a.m., New Mexico State Police responded to a single vehicle rollover on State Road 31.

Mario Pinion Medrano, 23, and Marcos Acosta, 25, both passengers in the 1999 Dodge, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The 21-year-old driver also sustained injuries in the crash.

All three men were from Hobbs.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in either crash, and State Police indicated seat belts may not have been properly used.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
