Bloomfield man accused of 10 drug-related charges

FARMINGTON — A Bloomfield man is accused of a multiple drug trafficking charges, including one count of methamphetamine trafficking, after a deputy found baggies of the drug on the suspect while he was being arrested.

James Sharp, 48, is accused of 10 charges in two cases including four second-degree felony counts of trafficking controlled substance and three third-degree felony counts of distribution of a controlled substance, according to court documents.

Nine of the charges were filed on June 19. A charge of trafficking controlled substances was filed June 22, a day after Sharp was arrested in Farmington, according to court records.

A deputy for the San Juan County Sheriff's Office was attempting to locate Sharp on Thursday in the 2400 block of East 20th Street when he observed the suspect exit a residence, according to the probable cause statement.

During a search of Sharp, a deputy found a green container containing three baggies which had a substance which tested a presumptive positive for meth.

A large amount of drug paraphernalia and small plastic baggies were found inside the residence Sharp allegedly exited from.

Sharp was wanted on a warrant for a Nov. 28, traffic stop during which he is accused of having several drugs packed for sale and distribution in his jacket, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

A deputy said Sharp, the driver, had a small, clear plastic bag containing a white, crystalline substance. Sharp and a female passenger denied possession of the baggie.

Sharp later told a deputy the baggie didn't belong to the woman. The vehicle was impounded and searched later that night after a search warrant was obtained.

The jacket also contained an identification card and multiple players' cards from local casinos with Sharp's name on them.

He was released on an unsecured appearance bond with a preliminary hearing set for Thursday morning in Aztec Magistrate Court.
