Window Rock woman arrested on murder charge
Kehadja Keams held in death of Bloomfield man
FARMINGTON — An Arizona women accused of the second-degree murder of a Bloomfield man has been arrested by federal authorities.
Kehadja Keams, 23, of Window Rock, Arizona, was charged March 13 with second-degree murder, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and larceny.
She is accused of battering 76-year-old Gilbert Benavidez, of Bloomfield, on April 4 and stealing his Buick sedan and cell phone, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
Benavidez died on Aug. 4 from an infection stemming from his head injuries.
Keams was arrested Tuesday in Arizona by members of the U.S. Marshals Service, according to a San Juan County Sheriff's Office Facebook post.
Detective Lt. Kyle Lincoln of the Sheriff's Office said Keams was transported to the San Juan County Adult Detention Center on Tuesday. She was being held Wednesday without bond.
A motion has been filed by the San Juan County District Attorney's Office to hold Keams without bond pending trial, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Dustin O'Brien.
A hearing regarding the motion in Aztec District Court has not been scheduled.
Keams made her first appearance in Aztec Magistrate Court Wednesday and did not have legal representation.
Her preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. on April 12 in Aztec Magistrate Court.
