FARMINGTON — The San Juan County Sheriff's Office responded to an aggravated assault incident Tuesday night that ended with a man dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputies were dispatched around 8:52 p.m. Tuesday to a residence along County Road 2686 north of Aztec on reports of a man firing a handgun at his girlfriend, according to a post on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

Craig Maccready, 27, was accused of firing three shots from a pistol in the direction of a truck occupied by his girlfriend and her 7-year-old daughter. None of the rounds struck the occupants or the truck.

More deputies were dispatched to the residence, and Maccready was found in the front yard with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He was transported to the San Juan Regional Medical Center, where he later was pronounced dead.

The Sheriff's Office post states Maccready was a member of the Center Point Fire Department but had been placed on a leave of absence about three weeks ago.
