Shiprock woman accused of stabbing man in head
Erica Lee is accused of armed robbery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon
FARMINGTON — A Shiprock woman is accused of stabbing a man in the head with a box cutter and stealing his backpack near the west side Walmart in Farmington.
Erica Lee, 31, was charged on June 19 in Farmington Magistrate Court with an armed robbery second-degree felony charge and an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon third-degree felony charge, court records state.
She had not retained legal representation as of Friday afternoon.
Officers for the Farmington Police Department were dispatched at 5:10 p.m. on June 16 to the area of 1150 W. Main St. in response to a man reportedly stabbed in the back of the head with a knife, according to the probable cause statement.
When officers arrived on the scene, they urged medics to hurry to the scene after observing the man bleeding profusely from the head.
The man told police a woman later identified as Lee stabbed him, took his backpack and was currently south of their location. He also told police Lee accused him of taking her purse, and he claimed he didn't.
The man was treated at the San Juan Regional Medical Center, where he received 12 staples to the back of his head and a doctor glued shut a 4-inch laceration near his ear, according to court documents.
Lee was taken into custody shortly afterward by police, who observed blood on the right leg of her pants. She was "visibly intoxicated" as officers placed her in the patrol vehicle, according to court documents.
While investigating the scene, police discovered a trail of blood drops that led them to an area where they initially spotted Lee.
The man's backpack was found at the location and was covered in a red liquid that appeared to be blood, law enforcement officials wrote in the probable cause statement.
Documents and mail inside the backpack had the man's name on them.
Lee changed her story about the alleged incident several times while speaking to police. She told police she was drinking with four men, and one of them took her purse. She later told police she was walking and observed a man laying on the ground.
Lee also told police the backpack was not hers, and she did not know how it got there.
She was being held at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center as of Thursday afternoon on a $20,000 cash/surety bond.
Lee's preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in Farmington Magistrate Court.
