FARMINGTON — The Bloomfield Police Department is looking for a person of interest in connection to a shooting Saturday afternoon on Ash Street.

Police are asking for the public's assistance locating Bailon Melvin Salazar, 50, for questioning, according to Officer Jeremy Duran. Anyone who knows where Salazar may be is encouraged to contact the police department at 505-632-6311.

Duran said the police department received a report of shots heard shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of Ash Street. Shortly after the first call, officers received a report of a man screaming for help.

When the police arrived on scene, they found Ernest Gurnnell, 61. Gurnnell flagged down police officers and told them he had been shot, Duran said.

Duran said Gurnnell was transported from the scene. Gurnnell had been shot in the right leg and underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, Duran said.

The police issued a reverse 911 call instructing neighbors to shelter in place, and the San Juan County Sheriff's office provided SWAT and helicopter assistance, Duran said. He said neighbors were helpful, and police received numerous calls from the public reporting possible sightings of the suspect.
