FARMINGTON — A 23-year-old Farmington man was arrested Thursday on suspicion he sexually abused a 5-year-old girl, according to a Farmington Police Department press release.

Police were dispatched to an apartment in Farmington after receiving reports of the alleged abuse, the release states.

The child's mother told police she awoke at about 2:30 a.m. after she heard the girl scream, according to the release. She said she went to the living room and found her daughter crying and attempting to pull up her pajama pants, the release states.

Scott Charles was lying next to the child unclothed from the waist down, according to the release.

Police suspect Charles had sexually abused the girl on other occasions, the release states.

Charles was arrested on the charge of criminal sexual penetration of a minor, a first-degree felony punishable by up to 18 years in prison, according to the release.

Charles was being held at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center on a $60,000 bond.
