FARMINGTON — Officers with the Farmington Police Department are investigating a shooting that involved two relatives this afternoon in south Farmington.

An 71-year-old grandfather allegedly used a handgun to shoot his 21-year-old grandson in the abdomen after a fight at a home at 2121 Camino Rio, according to Farmington police spokeswoman Georgette Allen.

The shooting was reported at 1:37 p.m. today, according to police dispatchers.

The grandson was in critical condition this afternoon and was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington before being flown to an Albuquerque hospital later in the day, Allen said.

Police have not released the names of those involved in the incident.

Neighbors along Camino Rio stood outside their homes today and watched police investigate. Police also shut down traffic along Camino Rio during the investigation.
