Man sent to prison in pickax slaying

FARMINGTON — Bufred Denetclaw was sentenced today to about eight years and four months in prison in the slaying of his 44-year-old brother, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

Denetclaw, 53, of Sheep Springs, was arrested June 23, 2014, on allegations he stabbed Willie Denetclaw to death with a pickax at a residence west of mile marker 50 on U.S. Highway 491 in Sheep Springs, according to court records.

Bufred Denetclaw was initially charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. He pleaded guilty Jan. 28 to involuntary manslaughter in a plea agreement with prosecutors, court records state.

Bufred Denetclaw will be on supervised release for three years following his prison sentence, the press release states.
