FARMINGTON — A Farmington man has been taken into police custody for allegedly firing a semi-automatic weapon at another man on Monday night at Brookside Park.

Marqus Garcia, 21, is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, shooting from a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a Farmington Police Department press release issued late Tuesday afternoon.

Police were dispatched at 7:39 p.m. Monday to the park in north Farmington after receiving reports of a shooting, the release states.

A 20-year-old man there told police he was sitting in his vehicle with his girlfriend and their 1-year-old son when another man came up and punched him through the driver's side window.

The man told police a group formed around his vehicle and he exited it with a shotgun, according to the release. Another vehicle then fled the parking lot, the release states, and a man inside that vehicle, later identified as Marcus Garcia, fired once into the crowd with a semi-automatic rifle.

The man with the shotgun then fired two rounds into the air, according to the release, and the suspect's vehicle sped off west on 17th Street.

Police arrested Garcia early Tuesday morning at a residence on West 24th Street in Farmington. The suspect's weapon was also located in the residence, according to police.

Farmington police spokeswoman Georgette Allen said Tuesday no one reported injuries in the shooting, but "there were people all around."

Garcia was being held at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center on a $40,000 bond.
