Inmate charged with choking cellmate
FARMINGTON — A 37-year-old inmate at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center is accused of battering another inmate.
Kendrick Joey is accused of choking Benito Archuleta shortly before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the medical ward at the detention center, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
A guard told detectives from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office Archuleta managed to pound on a cell room window to alert guards to his predicament, the affidavit states. The guard told detectives Joey had Archuleta in a "rear-naked choke hold."
Joey released the hold when guards entered the room and Archuleta slumped against a wall unconscious, the affidavit states.
An inmate told detectives Joey became upset with Archuleta because his television was too loud, according to the affidavit.
Joey refused to answer questions, but characterized the incident as horse play, the affidavit states.
Joey was charged Wednesday in Aztec Magistrate Court with aggravated battery.
He is being held on a $10,000 bond, according to court records.
He has not yet retained legal representation.
