FARMINGTON – A Crownpoint resident pleaded guilty to assault charges Monday in federal court in Albuquerque.

Edwin C. Johnson, 36, was arrested Dec. 9 for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend with an ax a few days earlier, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The woman had life-threatening injuries, and was flown by helicopter to a trauma hospital at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque and treated for a gash about 4 centimeters long, bloody discharge from both ears, and cranial pressure and swelling, according to the press release.

Johnson was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and attempt to commit murder. He pleaded guilty to all three charges Monday.

A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled. Johnson could be sentenced to nine to 10 years of prison, followed by supervised release.
