Man charged in shooting at Farmington park
No one injured in shooting
FARMINGTON — An 18-year-old Farmington man was accused last week of shooting at a vehicle occupied by three men after a botched drug deal.
Austin Wakkinen was charged Thursday in Farmington Magistrate Court with shooting at a motor vehicle, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, distribution of marijuana and a misdemeanor firearm offense.
Farmington police were dispatched at 10:13 p.m. Wednesday to Sun Valley Park, 5688 Pine St. in Farmington, after receiving reports of shots being fired, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
At the scene, officers found a spent .380 caliber shell casing and a 7.62x39 caliber shell casing, the affidavit states. A white Kia sedan occupied by three men was also at the scene, according to the affidavit.
The men told officers they were at the park to purchase marijuana from Wakkinen, but he became upset because they had no money to pay for it. Wakkinen allegedly threatened the men with a firearm and they fled the scene in their vehicle, according to the affidavit.
Wakkinen was contacted by a detective at his home on East Broadway Avenue. He initially denied having a firearm, but then admitted he possessed a .380 caliber handgun, the affidavit states.
He turned the gun over to the detective, who noted in the affidavit that a bullet was lodged in the barrel. Wakkinen told the detective the men stole two ounces of marijuana from him during a drug deal at the park, according to the affidavit.
He admitted to firing once at the vehicle as it fled the scene, but said he was only trying to shoot the vehicle's tires, the affidavit states.
