Two men charged with child sex abuse
AZTEC — Two men were charged last week with sexually assaulting minors in two separate incidents.
Shawn Paris was charged Friday in Aztec Magistrate Court with criminal sexual penetration of a child, a first-degree felony, on allegations he sexually assaulted a 10-year-old female relative.
Paris, 42, of San Juan County, is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond, according to court records. He has not yet retained legal representation, records state.
On Nov. 4, the girl reported to school officials that she had been molested, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
The girl was recalcitrant in her first interview with investigators on Nov. 9 and refused to discuss the "secrets" she shared with Paris, the affidavit states.
In a second interview on Nov. 17, the girl said in a written statement that Paris did inappropriate things to her with his genitals, according to the affidavit.
Paris agreed to participate in a polygraph test at the San Juan County Sheriff's Office on Nov. 20, the affidavit states. He failed the test and then admitted to detectives he had been in a sexual relationship with the girl for approximately a year, according to the affidavit.
Farmington attorney Christian Hatfield accompanied Paris to the interview with detectives. Hatfield said Monday he is no longer representing Paris.
According to the affidavit, Paris had been investigated previously on allegations of child sexual abuse.
In 2000, a 4-year-old boy accused Paris of touching his genitals and making him touch Paris' genitals, according to the affidavit. Three years later, a 4-year-old male relative of Paris made the same claims, the affidavit states.
Those incidents were investigated, but no charges were filed, the affidavit states.
Also on Friday, Rigoberto Marquez was charged in Aztec Magistrate Court with criminal sexual contact of a minor, a second-degree felony.
The 39-year-old Bloomfield man is wanted on an arrest warrant with a $50,000 cash-only bond, according to court records.
Marquez is accused of groping a teenage relative of his girlfriend on Oct. 27, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
The girl told Bloomfield police detectives she was with Marquez at his girlfriend's house when she told him that her back hurt, the affidavit states. He offered to give her a massage and she complied, according to the affidavit.
During the massage, Marquez allegedly groped the girl until she told him to stop, the affidavit states.
The girl told detectives she texted her boyfriend shortly after the incident and told him about it.
Detectives interviewed the boyfriend and confirmed the girl's account, the affidavit states.
No court dates have yet been scheduled for either defendant.
